The year is quickly coming to a close and we are already looking ahead to 2023! One thing we are looking forward to in 2023 is our Adopt a Cop BJJ Fight-a-Thon!
At Master Pattillo Martial Arts, we strive to be involved with our community. Part of our community involvement is organizing and participating in service projects and fundraisers. We believe this shows martial arts students they can make a difference doing something they love. It also shows parents and family members that the martial arts are more than kicks, punches, and fighting. The martial arts are about self-development, too.
The Mission of the Adopt a Cop BJJ program states:
To address critical gaps in the department-funded training of front line police officers by partnering with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gyms across the country to provide free or reduced rate memberships to police officers. Officers are sponsored until they achieve the rank of blue belt, which typically takes 12-18 months.
Police officers often find themselves in volatile situations which can quickly turn deadly. In these combative situations, being the more skilled grappler allows the officer a greater amount of control over the situation, which decreases the likelihood of injury or death for both officer and suspect.
Being a police officer is one of the most selfless, dangerous, and important jobs in our world today. Investing in our officers is an investment in our communities. Adopt A Cop BJJ aims to create a more resilient and more effective police force, improve police relations around our country, and ultimately reduce the incidence of police-involved shootings and deaths.
Because Adopt a Cop BJJ relies entirely on donations to fund police officers’ training, we are hosting a Fight-a-Thon to help raise money for the program.
On the day of the event, participants in our “Adopt a Cop BJJ Fight-a-Thon” will bring in donations they have collected from our community.
Participants will then get to “spar” or “roll” as many rounds as they like. Sparring is the term used for practice fighting with a resistant partner where martial artists practice their skills. Rolling is the term used in Jiu-Jitsu for sparring.
